It’s not out of luck that Roman got eaten by the Grimm instead of Ruby.

Grimm are attracted to negative emotion, and Roman was filled with hatred, bitterness (”The real world is cold! The real world doesn’t care about spirit!”), and violence, while Ruby was filled with heroic determination and hope.

Of the two of them, Roman definitely made the more appealing target.

This might be part of what Ozpin once talked about: “But perhaps victory is in the simpler things that you’ve long forgotten—things that require a smaller, more honest soul.” Ruby is so full of optimism, determination, hope, love, and goodness that there’s hardly any room for cynicism, bitterness, hatred, or even doubt that the heroes won’t win the day. Ruby just saw Pyrrha split her close friend into pieces and still jumped to protect Pyrrha without hesitation, because she believed immediately that Pyrrha couldn’t have meant to do it.

Ruby’s kindness and desire to help others fill her up and drive her to act. That’s probably not too appealing to the Grimm at all.
